WIN FOR GALLERY
18/02/2008 | General News
VCAT has approved the permit for the gallery to go ahead at the site of 559 Main Road Eltham, former home of the Eltham Wiregrass & Gateway Galleries. This is a great win for the continuation of the Arts in Eltham. The new design for the gallery will incorporate the quintesential building elements of the district - mudbrick and timbers.

The permit had been refused by the Nillumbik Council and be opposed by some residents who felt car parking was a larger issue than the furtherment of the arts and architecture in Eltham. This iconic building designed by the quintesential mudbrick architects of Eltham will enhance the Gateway, foster the arts and help perpetuate the reputation of Eltham as a place for art.

Arctic Voyage
11/09/2005 | Expeditions
Resolute, Sunday 11th September...

With all the plans and best intentions made from the comfort of my Eltham studio and with the latest technology carefully carried to the other side of the world,(laptop computer, cameras and video equipment), the High Arctic showed me who was in control and it was not me. Communication from 83 degrees north was not easy. Difficult also was communications from the "Kapitan Klebnikov', not to mention the cost. So plans for regular journal updates from the voyage to the top of Ellsemere Island and Greenland have not happened.

The sea voyage is over - after nearly one month at sea we disembarked yesterday at Resolute on the Corwallis Island, still in the High Arctic. There is currently a 40 knott blizzard blowing gusts of snow around in the sunshine, looks spectacular... 110 kilometers winds are forcast for later today. On arrival yesterday it was snowing hard, large flakes osbcuring everything. The place looked far more beautiful in the snow than on arrival a month ago when the earth was bare and dusty. Mervyn and are booked to fly out on the next plane - next Wednesday. There are two planes each week, weather permitting. Sometimes the planes arrive, circle once or twice and leave... then it's another four days before they try again. It can be chaos. We hope for calm conditions next Wednesday!

While I have a few days indoors at the Narwall hotel - I will try to prepare some words to post.. and images of the past few weeks of this extraordinary journey through the Arctic land of polar bears, muskox and ice.

Arctic Voyage
03/08/2005 | Expeditions
Jenni has been awarded a Quark Polar Artist-in-Residency to sail aboard the Kapitan Khlebnikov ship during August and September. Throughout the voyage Jenni will present a series of workshops and lectures featuring her work from Lake Eyre, the Australian desert and The Antarctic.

This will be Jenni's first visit to the Arctic. Working as a multi-medium artist, Jenni will be using a combination of tradional methods and technology to document the voyage. Sketch-books, pencils and paint have been packed along side SLR, digital and video cameras.

'Each painting expedition is different. Because of weight restrictions and the long distance travel to the Arctic I have had to reduce the amount of carry on materials. I plan to spend the next few months following the voyage working in the studio from the field sketches and photographs to create new exhibition works.'

During November and December Jenni will return to the Antarctic with Mervyn Hannan. They will work as a Multi-Media and Visual Arts team with photography, video, painting and sculpture.
